August, 2011 – ZBrush Interview: "Deus Ex: Human Revolution"
One of the oldest and most respected franchises in the gaming world, Deus Ex has long been awaiting a third installment. It's here at last! Released on August 23, 2011 "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" has already garnered terrific praise from critics and even higher accolades from gamers. As an example, IGN gave the game a score of 9.0 which they classify as "amazing". The player reviews on the same site give it a solid 10.

On an artistic front, the game has a very distinctive look that manages to be both realistic and stylized. It is a beautiful game with clever details everywhere you look. What's more, since the story focuses on human augmentation (bionics) moving into the mainstream, the art team had to blend man with machine. It had to look high tech, yet because this story is actually a prequel to the previous games it also had to look more primitive than what has been seen in the past.

For this interview, we spoke with Sébastien Legrain — known here at ZBC as sebcesoir. He's been an avid ZBrush user for a long time now and many of you will no doubt remember his The RiSiNG thread or phenomenal Projection Master tutorial. Always willing to share with the community, he was more than happy to talk about his team's techniques as they tackled Deus Ex.

August, 2011 – SIGGRAPH 2011 - Straight from the ZBlog

Siggraph 2011 promised to be an event of extreme proportions. The city of Vancouver was touted as a fun place with great surrounding attractions, and a Convention Center made famous during the 2010 Winter Olympics. The city and its people didn't disappoint!

The "Big Black Box" as it was being called on the showroom floor, reigned supreme and was never short of visitors. Pixologic really stood out as the show stopper with an ensemble cast of presenters taken straight from the ranks of Hollywood and Vancouver's finest studios!

August, 2011 – ZBrush Interview: Framestore
Most of the time when watching TV we tend to tune out during the commercials or even go do something else around the house until the program returns. Not so with the Super Bowl! This annual event charges the highest prices on U.S. TV for commercial slots and so advertisers always try to come up with something really special to grab audience attention and make that investment pay off. The result is that some people watch the Super Bowl for the commercials rather than the game!

One of this year's stand-out entries came from Coca-Cola in the form of an epic animated fantasy battle — with an unexpected conclusion. This highly memorable commercial was created in CG by Framestore under the production of Nexus. While it may have taken some a while to actually make this interview happen, we're sure you'll agree it was wroth the wait! The artists at Framestore really went all out, providing us with an unprecedented number of turntables for your viewing pleasure and even a behind the scenes "making of" movie!

August, 2011 – ZBrush, "For The Man Who Has Everything"
Dave Gibbons, the legendary artist of "Watchmen", used ZBrush while working on "Superman: For The Man Who Has Everything." ZBrush was utilized to create a three-dimensional model of the villain Mongul's head, as it is such an odd shape, Gibbons had difficulty rendering it directly from his mind.

Gibbons came to Comic-Con International in San Diego to discuss his life as a comic book creator and impart some technical knowledge upon the masses of fans who hope to follow in his footsteps. The interview rules were simple: Call out a letter, and let Gibbons do the rest. Covering the letters "Z" and "Q", he described two of the tools he has utilized to make his artwork, the computer program ZBrush and Q-Tips.

Pixologic's new "Artist in Action" series presents "Creating A Better Demo Reel With ZBrush 4," a step by step tutorial with Steve Warner, featured in the current issue of Imagine Magazine.

Generally speaking, there are two ways to land a job in the 3D industry. You can find work by who you know or you can find it by what you know, and when you're blindly sending out copies of your demo reel in hopes of finding work, you'll be judged solely on the latter. Steve Warner, Executive Director of the Digital Animation and Visual Effects School (DAVE School), shares 5 techniques you can use to make a better demo reel by harnessing the power of ZBrush 4.0

As far as I am concerned I couldn't imagine not including ZBrush in every step of my modeling pipeline, even during the early stages whilst blocking in the proportions." - Alessandro Baldasseroni

CineVision used ZBrush® in the pipeline where the details were added and sculpted in. And detail was extremely important in the IMAX environment. "...That is the power of ZBrush 2.0. It gets the artist closer to the act of creation: an act that we have separated ourselves from by wires and microchips and insane math and complicated procedures and segregated departments... "

"Pixologic™ has taken the concepts of 3D, infused it with a feeling of sculpting and created and arsenal of tools that set it above and beyond... Honestly I feel that ZBrush 2 can bridge the gap between a traditional media artist and the DCC artist. "
July 2004 - Computer Arts Magazine (PDF)
"ZBrush® from Pixologic™ has been around for a few years now, but it remains a remarkable graphics program that really has no equal – or even poor copy, for that matter. Version 2 introduces more 3D tools and features to the already impressive set, making the tool evenly split between a 2.5D painting program and full 3D modelling application. In working practice though, it's both, because many of the workflows in ZBrush® make use of the 2.5D canvas and the polygon models. "ZBrush 2 is a stunning 3D modelling package, and should be on every character artist's list of products to buy .... it sets a standard for high-detail polygon modelling. "ZBrush® is the single best organic 3D modelling system yet invented. [5 out of 5 stars]"

December 2001 - Creative-3D.net (PDF)
"Pixologic's ZBrush 1.23B is one the most innovative and creative digital tools to appear in a very long time. It's difficult - if not impossible to pigeon hole this program into any existing category. To call it a paint program does not do it justice, to call it a 3D modeler, procedural shader, or 2D Painter also doesn't fit. ZBrush® is all the above, and more."
June 2001 - Macworld (PDF)
"No matter how much graphics experience you have, odds are you've never seen anything quite like ZBrush 1.1. Part 3-D modeler and renderer, part paint program, this unique application lets you easily create complex images with sophisticated color and lighting effects."
Spring 2001 - EFX Art and Design (Vol. 8, Edition 31) (PDF)
"ZBrush® is a wonderful new addition to the digital artist's toolbox. The program is fast and responsive, and for being only version 1.2, it is very well constructed and quite stable."
